Director: John Madden
Starring: Helen Mirren, Sam Worthington, Tom Wilkinson, Jessica Chastain
An espionage thriller that takes us from 1997 to 1966 and back. It involves Moussad secret agents, Rachel, David and Stefan and their search for Nazi war criminal Vogel, the surgeon of Birkenau. They were hailed as heroes by their country for decades because they accomplished their mission…or so they said.
I had not seen the trailers, or read any information on this movie before going to see it, so I walked in a blank slate with no expectations other than the high ones I hold for Helen Mirren. There is no other words to describe her except bad ass. She was magnificent in The Queen, and I loved her in Calendar Girls. Let’s face it, we should all be so lucky to age as well as she has.
The Debt had it’s share of shocking moments and suspense to be sure. The acting was exceptional. The story was smart and well told. Unfortunately, in my opinion, there were too many moments in the movie that were slower than the justice that should have been served to those who committed the atrocities on the Jewish people. Anytime I go to a movie and wonder what time it is, that movie has not kept my attention like I expect it to.
With that said, I thought Jessica Chastain really stood out and has a bright future ahead. Her younger version of Mirren was spot on and believable. She is beautiful and talented, I hope to see more of her.
The big question to be answered, would I recommend the movie? Yes, especially if you have more patience than I do for the slow parts. I do not think it will disappoint.
