Director Tony Scott’s classic 1986 Tom Cruise film Top Gun is set to get a 3D conversion for a theatrical re-released in early 2012…
The 3D conversion is being done by Legend3D and the CEO Rob Hummel had this to say during the panel, We think there is great potential for catalog titles in 3D, but studios have had trouble justifying the expense.
I’m not a fan of 3D conversion and I have 2 words for the companies involved with post-conversions: “Keep Trying”. Again, I’m not a fan of some of the results but I highly encourage that those who have the ability to keep practicing and perfecting their craft. I think a lot of movies can appreciably benefit by adding a 3rd dimension for theater patrons and would like to see the process perfected. I admittedly think that the idea probably lends itself better to animated films but will try to remain optimistic for those who continue the current trend. Currently I’m excited about the re-release of the Lion King even though I can’t completely imagine how the film will appreciate with the conversion I still think it’s a highly enjoyable film and am anxious about sharing the experiences with my children.
More importantly I want to see what Jim Cameron will be able to produce with his re-release of his groundbreaking film Titanic. Hopefully once perfects the practices he will undoubtedly develop during the process he will be able to loan these ideas to other studios and continue the maturation of the process.
Top Gun wouldn’t be my first pick, or second for that matter, for the conversion process but I wish them welcome the attempt and which those involved the best during the process. C’mon guys, show me a masterpiece!
