Jim Carrey and Steve Carell in BURT WONDERSTONE

Jim Carrey and Steve Carell are usually enjoyable to watch on their own and it looks as if we may be in for a treat as both stars have cast in a new comedy which will pit the two comedians against once another in a new movie as rivaling stage magicians.

Set in the world of rival Las Vegas magicians, Carell plays a more traditional magic man who is dethroned by a hip younger illusionist and must then find a way to rediscover his love for magic.

Don Scardino directs from a script that has seen numerous writers working on it including Jason Reitman, Chad Kultgen, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein.

This really sounds fun, but I won’t commit any excitement until both Carell and Carrey sign binding contracts to ensure their participation in this movie. The premise sounds fun and I can already imagine a million scenarios that can be created with this template but without a firm commitment I won’t allow myself to get carried away.

Carrey has always been an enigma to me with his film selection. Mr. Poppers Penguins is a no-brainer as it’s instant cash for the actor and an almost guaranteed success at the box office due to audiences holding him in high regard since the 90’s. It seems that he’s making an effort to return to form in the comedy department as he had previously been attached to that 3 stooges movie for a fairly long time before finally bowing out, and seems pretty intent on re-capturing any lost fans.

Carell’s star is still rising and Carrey is wise to work with him to help maintain the effort to regain his place in comedy. I’m obviously excited about the prospect about these two teaming up, but I won’t be holding my breath on this one until I hear more news.
