They announced plans to remake 21 Jump Street a few months back and announced a cast that included Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, Ice Cube with a planned cameo by Johnny Depp. Things went pretty quiet for a while but the movie has now resurfaced with a full redband trailer to watch, let’s take a look.
I didn’t see too much that reminded me of the original show other than the premise of the movie, but I did see a lot of the enjoyably harsh Jonah Hill style of comedy that’s almost wearing thin, but still has a lot of laughs left inside. Channing Tatum has yet to really impress me with much of anything that he’s done but the guy looks like he might have some skill in the acting department and I’m not all that surprised considering the crazy story of the movie they’re making on his life in Magic Mike. To do that kinda stuff you have to have a sense of humor.
Sure, someone passerby staring at your monitor may confuse this trailer for “Superbad 2” but is that all that bad? Yes and no. The movie seems to capture that frat humor that’s synonymous with Jonah Hill these days, and heavily relies on comedic elements to gain any traction and I don’t think that it’s completely bad to do that. It helps differentiate what they’re doing now from the original show while seeming fun and enjoyable for those unfamiliar with the property on which it’s based.
It looks fun but I can’t imagine how they’ll squeeze Johnny Depp into this. They’ve already included an all-star cast of comedians to help along the way including Nick Offerman, Rob Riggle , Dave Franco , and Ellie Kemper . I’m not even convinced that his cameo is needed in this as the movie seems to be able to stand on its own. What do you guys think, does it seem fun to you or am I completely off?
