Giamatti wants to be in Amazing Spider-Man…as The Rhino?

Actor Paul Giamatti (Sideways, John Adams) is launching a last ditch effort campaign to be in the upcoming ‘Amazing Spider-Man’- as Aleksei Sytsevich., better known as The Rhino.
The Toronto Sun reports:

Giamatti made his case during an appearance on U.S. late-night show Conan on Tuesday, stating, “The Rhino was fantastic. He was, like, a Russian guy. He was real fast and he hit stuff real hard… He had, like, a rhino suit on, and his face was sticking out of the rhino suit and he had, like, a horn. I think I would be the best Rhino possible.”

Of course, the main foe in the upcoming film is The Lizard, and there were no plans for The Rhino to so much as cameo. The Rhino, also in my view (and I’ll catch hell for this) is nearly a re-interpetation of X-Men’s Juggernaut. As for Rhino in a live action setting, I actually picture a fella like Predators’ Oleg Taktarov myself- but in any case, at this stage it’s nothing more than wishful thinking. It’s possible someone might consider Rhino for the film after this one, but I have problems seeing Giamatti in the part. As much as I hate to say it, he could pass for a rebooted Doc Ock, but that’s a stretch. I also wouldn’t mind if Giamatti were just another teacher or instructor of Peter Parker. That would be fine too.

Would you like to see The Rhino one day?

  1. The Rhino has similar powers to the Juggernaut, but that doesn’t make him a “reinterpretation.” If that’s all Marvel was after… they’d just throw the Juggernaut in the Spiderman comics, given the fact that it wouldn’t be the first time Marvel villains have appeared in different ‘hero’ comics.

As for Giammatti… I’d want to see how serious he was being when he said it. It seems like they’re *very* far into the development of this project, beyond the script phase and well into filming. Doesn’t really seem possible to do anything other than adding in a cameo at the end, a la the Marvel Studio marvel films have done with their Supers. All that said, Rhino’s not a bad villain and Sony should jump at any chance to get Giammatti in a *future* Spiderman film (the guy is one of the best actors out there)… so not a bad idea for a *sequel*.

  2. Paul G. can do whatever he wants I like him that much. Do me a favor any time you reference the great Oleg Taktarov you refer to him as former Mixed Martial Artist or former UFC fighter Oleg Taktarov. My cage loving mind can’t process him as anything else.
