Akira Production HALTED

Seems that there’s more trouble surrounding the production of the live action adaptation of Akira as it seems that production on the film has been shut down entirely. What happened? It seems to be a budget issue as the producers for the film don’t seem to be entirely happy with the way things are going now and have chosen to put things on “hold” until all issues can be resolved.

The project, which has been through several incarnations, is being shut down in the face of casting, script and budget issues. The production offices in Vancouver are being closed, with below-the-line talent and crew told to stop working. “Everybody is being sent home,” according to an insider…

…Collet-Serra already had halved the budget from the incarnation that Albert Hughes was going to direct. He now is working on a budget in the $90 million range.

The goal, says an insider, is to bring the budget down to between $60 million and $70 million.

This is a little disappointing. Don’t get me wrong, I have very little faith in Hollywood to adapt an anime into a live action film instead my disappointment is out of the curiosity of me wanting to see how bad the film could be. Sure there was plenty of potential for this one to be a stinker but I had a little faith because the Book of Eli helmer Albert Hughes was involved at one point and I wondered if his input would have any effect on the direction of what Collet-Sera was planning.

I have no idea where this might head next but I will keep a keen eye on the progression of this film moving forward. Anybody glad this got halted?
