G.I. Joe: Retaliation delayed until March 2013

International friends this is a Sucker Punch. Yeah, it leaves a pain in the stomach that pains me so much that I’m hobbled over the keyboard as I write this. It’s being reported that somehow the increasingly interesting looking G.I. Joe: Retaliation has abandoned its June 29th Release and has been pushed to March 2013 for one inexplicable but equally painful reason: 3D.

“We’re going to do a conscientious 3D job because we’ve seen how it can better box office internationally,” one of the studio execs just told me. “Jim Cameron did all of Titanic‘s 3D in post — and look how well that movie turned out.”

I won’t talk about how they already blew a wad of cash on promoting this film for the last few months. I wont. Instead I will say this: The entire they promoted this film I kept saying to myself “I’m glad it’s not in 3D”. It’s not needed. It’s unnecessary. Not every film is appreciably enhanced by the medium. I saw the Avengers in 3D and realized I shoulda saved myself the extra few bucks because it was completely unwarranted. I don’t remember a single scene in that film that was enhanced by the post conversion 3D and I’m disappointed that this film that was on my summer ‘radar’ is being pushed back until March. Does this film really need 3D? Do they really think that an action movie like G.I. Joe will perform better in March rather than in the summer? I didn’t want to see this movie in 3D. I’d already begun to dislike the medium and now a summer film is a casualty of its increase in popularity. Sure by the time March rolls around there’s the possiblity that my excitement will be rekindled but for now they just left a big gaping hole in my chest where my Joe’s once were.
