Will Michael Fassbender break the videogame curse with Assassins Creed?

There’s a well known secret curse surrounding films adapted from videogames. The stench used to plague the comic book industry when making the transition but that genre found a way to lift the curse and dump it on the video game market. There have been several attempts over the years to help videogames make the transition from medium to medium with varying levels of success but none that have truly met the expectations of filmmakers or audiences. Michael Fassbender wants to help change that. Every now and then Sony will give their premiere videogame partners the courtesy of signing a film adaptation development deal. Metal Gear Solid, God of War, Twisted Metal, Shadow of the Colossus, and many more are “in development” at Sony where they’ve lied dormant for what seems to be eons without really any significant development being made public aside from the initial announcement and early excitement and now we’re getting word that Assassins Creed is joining this list with two key difference that might help them go from movie development hell next to Solid Snake to actual realized and released film like Prince of Persia starring ‘Chest Jake’ and that’s the inclusion of rising star Michael Fassbender as both producer and signing on to star in the film and the fact that they’ve decided to keep the film independent for now.

On the casting Jean-Julien Baronnet, CEO of Paris-based Ubisoft Motion Pictures, said:

“Michael Fassbender was our first choice… Michael is an extremely smart, talented, versatile and committed actor.”

While Sony could still come on-board to distribute, Ubisoft will “stick to their initial plan and develop the film independently in order to maintain greater creative control”. Ubisoft Motion Pictures will now look at hiring a writer and director, and re-enter talks with studios at a later date.

The approach they’re taking gives me the impression that Ubisoft Motion Pictures paid careful attention to the production rate of the franchises that signed with Sony and with everything that happened surrounding the Halo film dissipation from a few years back. Michael Fassbender could certainly own the role of a medieval assassin scaling buildings and taking out monarchs and rulers and the idea would have me gitty to see these film franchise attempt to take Resident Evil’s crown for most successful game to ifilm adaptation… I just gotta see it to believe it. I spent far too much time imagining what a Metal Gear film would look like without any development or satisfaction for me to get overly invested in this film until I see some actual traction in development. We’ll see where this is going, but that’s all for now…
