This is starting to get ridiculous. No studio is willing to be upstaged this Christmas season and everyone has decided to release their big budget film trailer throughout the month of December. It’s enough to forget that we’re supposed to be talking about the Academy Awards now. Somebody leaked the trailer for Star Trek Beyond and the folks at Paramount decided to just say ‘screw it’ and release an official copy rather than make a big stink about it. Classy.
This trailer will definitely get mixed reactions. It’s immediately evident that this trailer is completely different in tone than the previous films and wants to let you know that there’s gonna be some popcorn style fun in this film. Justin Lin is taking over for Abrams since he shifted to a galaxy far far away and it’s making me feel torn on this one. I liked a lot of what Abrams did with the previous films as far as aesthetics and casting but really didn’t like Star Trek Into Darkness’ villain. One thing I liked that Abrams did was his exploration of character relationships. I liked seeing the relationship between Captain Pike and Captain Kirk, Kirk and Spock, Spock and Uhura and more. This trailer doesn’t reveal Idris Elba as the villain but it is a good tease for the tonal shift with th ‘splosions, motorcycle, and Beastie Boys music.
I’m a bit bothered by the amount of action in this trailer. I loved Star Trek because it was a different tone and slower pace than other space faring sci-fi and didn’t try to be a complete action outing. So far this trailer throws that whole concept out the window. Will there be any intellectual discussion or rational problem solving in this one? That would be illogical.
Observations:
- There’s still a good level of humor in this trailer that I like
- The action sequences already look better than the previous films
- There’s a lot of action sequences. WTF.
- The Beastie Boys. For a Star Trek movie. Seriously?
Can someone please redub this trailer with more a more appropriate Star Trek score? I think it would fix my perception on this film and help a lot for anyone else who’s mixed on this one.
