How to win friends: smuggle $300k of uncut cocaine into your snooty prep school. Based on the wild story of a teen drug trafficker who rocked headlines in 1984, this true crime caper stars Thomas Mann (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) as Toby, a blue-collar scholarship student at an elite boarding school who finds an in with the cool crowd by supplying them with cocaine. But things spiral out of control when Toby goes from small-time dealer to international drug trafficker, culminating in a trip to Colombia and a daring deal with a cartel. Capturing the music, style, and burgeoning “greed is good” ethos of the 1980s,THE PREPPIE CONNECTION is a stranger than fiction look at the price of popularity.
The true story of a social outcast turned daring drug dealer, “The Preppie Connection” features Thomas Mann, fresh off his critically acclaimed turn in the somewhat surprise hit of last year “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl”. This time Mann stars as a kid from the 1980’s and the other side of the tracks who supplies fellow students at an elite Boarding School with their incessantly in demand cache of cocaine.
Personally, I detest everything even remotely preppie, pampered, privileged, elitist or entitled. And this flick is rife with such mentality. However, the Trailer for “The Preppie Connection” looks like this effort may prove to be an engaging roller coaster of a ride through an ’80’s culture class and high stakes drug smuggling while perhaps even tossing in a few surprises along the way.
Director, Co-Writer and Co-Producer Joseph Castelo has a relatively limited resume, so it will be interesting to see what he can do with a project that is quite clearly “his baby”.
“The Preppie Connection” opens in theaters and through Video On Demand on March 18.
