We’ve already taken a look at some of the films that will ring in the New Year, and a few of them are already circulating in theaters. In this post we’re going to take a broader look at the year as a whole, specifically focusing on a genre we should see a lot of in the next few months. xXx: The Return Of Xander Cage
We covered this in the January movie lineup, but suffice it to say we’re excited to see Vin Diesel’s Xander Cage back in action, even if this is destined to be a critical flop.
Logan
We’re trying to avoid listing superhero movies because they’re almost their own category of action, but this finale for the Hugh Jackman-as-Wolverine series looks incredibly different for a superhero movie. Expect a powerful and emotional drama that’s nonetheless overflowing with claw-drawing action.
Ghost In The Shell
Not everything has to be a sequel or part of a franchise, and though this movie is based on the Japanese manga, it will be entirely original to most audience members. With Scarlett Johansson kicking all kinds of ass as a human-cyborg special ops agent you can sign us up.
King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword
It’s tough to tell what to expect from this first film in Guy Ritchie’s planned Arthurian franchise. Early looks indicate that it will be a larger-than-life action epic and a very different take on Arthurian lore.
John Wick: Chapter 2
For an entirely original shoot-em-up movie, John Wick did well with critics back in 2014. The Atlantic might have put it best when it said that it’s not perfect, but it is special. There’s an inexplicable vibe to John Wick that you don’t get in every action movie. This in part based because Keanu Reeves is uniquely enjoyable with a gun in his hands. This sequel should be one of the better movies of the first half of the year.
The Fate Of The Furious
The success of the Fast & Furious franchise still has to be considered one of the biggest surprises in Hollywood. There are some who would have preferred to see Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) and company call it quits after Fast 7‘s emotional conclusion paying tribute to the late Paul Walker (who played Brian O’Connor). Still, this one will is guaranteed to draw a crowd and if it follows the recent trajectory it could be one of the best films in the franchise.
The Mummy
It almost feels like The Mummy never left. The 1999 movie still has a certain charm, and there’s even a casino game based on the film that’s still circulating online. Casino Source lists it alongside other modern movie franchises that are used as background material at slot gaming sites. Even with the ’99 movie still fresh in our minds, Universal chose The Mummy as the film that will kick off what’s expected to be a sprawling “universe” of connected monster movies. Tom Cruise will star, so you know the action will be off the charts.
Dunkirk
Possibly the year’s most intriguing film, Dunkirk will be the first war epic from director Christopher Nolan. Nolan has become one of the most beloved and respected directors in the business, but a World War II movie is a different look for him. An article at Cinema Blend pointed out that Nolan has cast an unknown actor (19-year-old Fionn Whitehead) in a lead role. for the first time. It’s a weird and exciting project for one of today’s most best directors.
Wonder Woman
Again, it’s not all about the superhero movies, but who’s not excited to see the first DC movie with a female lead? As mediocre as Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice was, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman was pretty compelling, and this has a chance to be a surprisingly fun movie.
War Of The Planet Of The Apes
The two previous films, Rise and Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes, were better than most expected them to be. And in this one, all hell will finally break loose. If nothing else, the motion capture work of Andy Serkis as Caesar the ape has been breathtaking every time and is worth a trip to the cinema to experience.
