January is coming to a close, so it's time to look back at the best Blu-ray and limited releases of the month. A heavy selection of movies based on a true events and military themed. Onto the movies: OPERATION AVALANCHE: https://youtu.be/6vArTqFISvs This is a clever and exciting conspiracy thriller about two CIA agents that go undercover at NASA and disguise themselves as documentary filmmakers in hopes to catch a Russian mole. There is a lot of intrigue and suspense that not only will appeal to fans of NASA, but everyone who loves a mystery. It has many tie-ins to the Cold War traveling to the moon, and even Stanley Kubrick. The film has a very classic look that fits the timeframe of the late 60's. The cast is small but effective, mainly three actors taking up the bulk of the scenes (Matt Johnson, Owen Williams and Josh Boles). This is one of those under-the-radar films that you might not have heard of, but really should see. Operation Avalanche is out now on DVD DEEPWATER HORIZON: https://youtu.be/S-UPJyEHmM0 The BP oil disaster rocked many, but the story behind the people who were on the oil rig that exploded and caused the huge spill, is finally told. Director Peter Berg joins up again with Mark Wahlberg as his lead actor in another movie based on true events. There have been recent releases of movies based on recent events (Sully, Patriots Day) that have had extensive coverage in media, but the story of these individuals hasn't been chronicled much. The movie focuses on the individual and collective jobs as well as the camaraderie between these men and women, as they prepare the monstrous rig for the drilling. The film has a lot of heart and it does a nice job telling the story of the events that lead up to the explosion and the aftermath of it. These are ordinary people that you don't hear much about and probably never think of, this is a story that had to be told and you should watch it for yourself. THE ACCOUNTANT: https://youtu.be/DBfsgcswlYQ Ben Affleck had a heck of a 2016 in movies and The Accountant is one of those movies that put him over the top. This movie has it all, great action, drama and suspense. Affleck plays the unlikeliest of CPA's, he's a cold blooded killer on a mission. He also plays a autistic man. Autism is a topic that's brought up in the movie a lot, which isn't a topic movies usually touch upon, so kudos to the filmmakers for making it a point of emphasis. Affleck's character Christian Wolff might be more of a quiet badass than Jason Bourne, actually he seemed more lethal and impressive. I loved everything about the movie. The plot was intriguing and kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. The supporting cast is strong with Anna Kendrick, J.K. Simmons and Jon Bernthal. There is really nothing not to like about this movie. It simply is one of the best films of 2016. Check out my full review for more details. Go get and watch this movie. The Accountant is available now on Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD, Digital HD and On Demand THE WHOLE TRUTH: https://youtu.be/eNjXFdiC1O0 A very intriguing murder mystery, a who done it kinda film. While Keanu Reeves will be kicking ass in John Wick 2, in The Whole Truth he plays a defense lawyer that's part of a murder trial of a young man that is accused of killing his father. Renee Zellweger also stars in the film as the wife of the murdered man, and the client of Reeves' character. This movie will have you full engaged and hooked on the events and reveals of this murder. This isn't a typical role for Reeves, but he does nice work. The Whole Truth is available now on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD COME AND FIND ME: https://youtu.be/KbSxeF4eW8I This movie really surprised me, in a good way. David (Aaron Paul) and Claire (Annabelle Wallis) play a young couple that is going about their lives together, until one day Wallis' character mysteriously disappears. It's up to David to follow the trail and discover what happened to Claire. If you are looking for a crime thriller that will have you guessing, then this is the movie to check out. Come and Find Me is certainly suspenseful and thrilling. Come and Find Me is available now on Blu-ray, DVD, Digital HD and On Demand THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN: https://youtu.be/KkoEE1i0CX8 One of my personal favorite suspense mystery thriller of 2016. Based on the wildly popular book of the same title, the movie version is just as satisfactory. Emily Blunt is Oscar worthy in the role of Rachel. She might play the best alcoholic I've ever seen on screen. The cast is well rounded with the likes of Justin Theroux, Rebecca Ferguson and Haley Bennett. If you haven't read the book, the movie will keep you guessing till the very end. The twist and turns are executed tremendously. There are multiple stories to follow, but the film is well organized and easy to follow. Fans of the book should be proud of the movie. Girl on the Train was reminiscent to me of another one of my all-time favorites, Gone Girl. This is a can't miss movie. The Girl on the Train is available on Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD, Digital HD and On Demand ROGER CORMAN'S DEATH RACE 2050: https://youtu.be/ZMkeGPbBS18 Jason Statham made Death Race cool and Frankenstein a badass, now cult legend Roger Corman is building upon that with Death Race 2050. Set in the year 2050, the overpopulated planet needs to start eliminating people, so naturally a Death Race is the way to do it. The cool thing about the movie is that it looks straight out of the 1970's, yet it's supposed to be set in the far away future. It has a lot more of a grindhouse tone to it though. It's wacky and overflowing with action and explosions. The vehicles are pretty awesome to look at also. It's a movie that should attract lovers of the cult grindhouse genre. It's the kinda mindless fun that anyone can use from time to time. Roger Corman's Death Race 2050 is available now on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD XXX: 15TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION: https://youtu.be/Spx-Mx3xhYY It's been 15 years since Vin Diesel introduced us to Xander Cage, the underground thrill-seeker that is tasked with going undercover to take down a Russian mob. XXX is one of the more innovative and action packed films we have seen in the past 15 years. It really is the movie that wrote the blueprint for crazy action scenes for movies liked the Fast and Furious franchise. With the January release of the XXX sequel, this is the perfect time to check out the original. The Blu-ray is loaded with extra features, including 10 featurettes. If you are a fan of the franchise, like myself, this is the Blu-ray to get. XXX: 15th Anniversary Edition is out now on Blu-ray and Digital SURF'S UP 2: WAVEMANIA: https://youtu.be/zJarcJEmwgQ Surf's Up was a adorably fun movie about penguins. Well, they are back, this time they are are wrestling their way to the top. Surf's Up combines with WWE to form the penguin version of WWE. It might sound silly, but it's fun. The original cast of penguins is back alongside John Cena, The Undertaker, Triple H, Paige and Mr. McMahon's penguins versions. Wavemania is an enjoyable watch for kids and WWE fans will certainly get a kick out of the likes such as The Undertaker uttering surfer-esque lines. The penguins do it right, without compromising any of the fun that made the original a hit. Surf's Up 2: Wavemania is available now on DVD and Digital HD BATTLE FOR INCHEON: OPERATION CHROMITE: https://youtu.be/uSW8ODoGxEI Liam Neeson plays General Douglas McArthur who is appointed the head of UN Command during the height of the Korean War. He's tasked with leading a secret operation to infiltrate North Korea. This is also a film based on a true story (it's a trend in this month's movies). The action is explosive (no pun intended) with all sorts of explosions and solid CGI. Neeson seems like a natural in the role of the general. This is a fairly violent movie, but also feels realistic and paints a picture of what was going on during this tense operation. War junkies, this is right up your alley. Battle for Incheon: Operation Chromite is out now on Blu-ray and DVD USS INDIANAPOLIS: MEN OF COURAGE https://youtu.be/ZDPE-NronKk Nicholas Cage has been in some pretty bad movies lately, USS Indianapolis isn't one of those movies. Based on the true story of a ship of men tasked on a mission, but when plans blow up (no pun intended), they are hanging onto their lives with no help in sight. This movie is sort of like Jaws mixed with The Hunt for Red October. The intensity and teeth clenching moments are undeniable. Just like Deepwater Horizon, this is one of those stories many might not be aware of and it deserved a movie. USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage is available on Blu-ray, DVD, Digital HD and On Demand THE HANDMAIDEN: https://youtu.be/vHOmrolJEiY The Handmaiden is a stellar film from Park Chan-wook. It's set in 1930's Korea and the story deals with romance and deception. The movie is so well put together stylistically and visually impressive with the slick camera work. The actors might be unknowns to many, but they do very good work. This is one of the best foreign films of the year, no question. Fans of Chan-wook will most definitely enjoy this one, but others will undoubtedly appreciate it. There is a little bit of everything in the movie, from romance to suspense. The Handmaiden is out now on DVD and Digital HD THE MONSTER: https://youtu.be/tbyCUdzR87Y A young girl and a mother lost in the middle of nowhere in the middle of night with only an evil beast lurking. I really enjoyed the suspense of the movie and the chilly moments it had. Zoe Kazan and Scott Speedman star in this dark (literally) horror. The setting sets up a lot of the tone of the movie, it makes you feel uneasy, which is a good thing when it comes to horror. It's cool to see Kazan step out of her comfort zone and see her in a film like this and is very good at it. The Monster is an under-the-radar horror movie that will definitely give you some chills. The Monster is available now on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD MASTERMINDS: https://youtu.be/zIkzuXDhCcQ Outrageous and funny, unbelievably based on a true story also. A stellar comedic cast of Kristen Wiig, Zach Galifianakis, Owen Wilson, Kate McKinnon and Jason Sudeikis star in this action comedy. Galifianakis plays at armored-truck driver that's lured into a scheme and gets away with $17 million dollars. It's fascinating that this group of schmucks pulled off a heist such as that, so watching the movie I couldn't help but be all in. There are dozens of really funny moments. This film has the trifecta, comedy, great talent and an unbelievable true story that's entertaining to watch. Whether you're a fan of these actors or comedy, Masterminds is a movie you can't miss. Masterminds is available now on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD THE LIGHT BETWEEN OCEANS: https://youtu.be/lk7yw00a4fs One of the best films of the year is a powerful romantic drama about a couple who find a child offshore. Director Derek Cianafrance does a masterful job directing this beautiful looking film. The scenes and coastal New Zealand landscapes look picturesque. Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander are phenomenal in their roles. Top level work from them, especially Fassbender. Rachel Weisz is also very impressive. Aside from the gorgeous look of the film and master level acting, the story is very intriguing and equally heartbreaking. The film feels very timeless and it is impactful, especially relatable to parents. A great date movie also, just bring the tissues, trust me. Read my full review of the movie. The Light Between Oceans is available now on Blu-ray, DVD, Digital HD and On Demand JACK REACHER: NEVER GO BACK: https://youtu.be/aRwrdbcAh2s Jack Reacher was a pleasant surprise action flick, so Never Go Back had a standard to live up to, which it does. The sequel brings Cobie Smulders in to team up with Tom Cruise, and it is a good pairing. The film has a ton of action and some badass fight sequences, such as the opening diner scene that gets things started. Cruise is great, the charm, charisma and smart ass personality of Reacher is fun to watch. Never Go Back is not only just an action movie, but there is a good element of mystery. There is a purpose of their mission and there is something to figure out and solve for the characters. This is a franchise that is officially on its way to challenge the likes of Bourne and even Cruise's own franchise, Mission Impossible. This movie is fun, entertaining and action packed, unquestionably worth your time checking it out. Read my full review of the movie. Jack Reacher: Never Go Back is available now on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD, Digital HD and On Demand GIRLS: THE COMPLETE FIFTH SEASON: https://youtu.be/uTowKgaFZyk The girls are now in different points in their lives. Shoshanna is living in Japan, Hannah and Fran are teaching, Jenna is working on a relationship, Marnie is seeking personal space from Desi. Add a few twists and turns to all that and a lot happens in the fifth season of the show. The show hasn't missed a beat yet. Filled with drama and relatable characters, it's the show that is still a must see. The Blu-ray and DVD sets come with with over 20 deleted and extended scenes that haven't been seen before. Fans of the series will have to see this, especially for all the bonus content. If you haven't seen this show then start binge watching and catch up to it. Girls: The Complete Fifth Season is available now on Blu-ray and DVD BALLERS: SEASON 2: https://youtu.be/kli27W4QTQU Ballers is one of the best shows out there that people are sleeping on. This is the sports version of Entourage. Doesn't hurt that at the center of it is megastar Dwayne Johnson in the lead, who is ideal in the role of being a manager to the players. Season 2 of this HBO show doesn't disappoint at all, plenty of drama and intrigue. What I appreciate about Ballers is how authentic the show feels. The counties favorite sports gets a premiere behind the curtain. You really can't go wrong with this show, if you haven't seen it then do yourself a favor and check out the first season before you can get to this one.
