I went into Spider-Man: Homecoming with mild expectations, and boy was this a great idea, because those expectations were absolutely blown out of the park!
THE GOOD:
There is so much good to cover about Spider-Man: Homecoming, so to get the full spiel, you are just going to have to see it for yourself. But to start, I would like to add that, this long list of great things about this movie is coming from a die-hard DC fan, who had very mild expectations going into this film.
The very first thing to stand out about this movie was the way in which the city and people of the movie were portrayed. Each and every character felt extremely real, to the point it felt as if we were watching many real life interactions and acts. Everything from the city life, to the way each actor played their part, felt so real to the point that this may in be the most realistic and well acted Marvel movie ever.
Coming from a D.C. fan, this is a very interesting thing to note, as this is really the first time a superhero movie without a down to earth grittiness feel, made me feel this type of realism.
Another thing to note, is how well cast and written each character of this film was. . .
To start, Michael Keaton shows his super seasoned acting skills as The Vulture (a pretty basic villain, made very interesting by the writing and his acting) while his entire crew was made up of people who seemed like they were also executed well.
To add to the excellent characters, the high-school scenes were just as golden, as they not only felt realistic, but were extremely relatable to the character of Peter Parker and everyone who has been to High-school in the past 20 years.
The characters of the school were not only well (and accurately) cast, but they each played their part to the point I am still shocked at how funny and witty each character was.
Flash Thompson (Tony Revolori) was a typical yet interesting bully, while Zendaya’s character was even more intriguing. Peter’s best friend Ned (Jacob Batalon) was a very surprising show stealer, as his comedic performance as Peter’s best friend, is going to be sure to score him many future acting jobs (he was seriously talented).
The comedy of the movie was by far some of the funniest in superhero movie history, as it didn’t feel forced or un-natural at all. I (and everyone else around me) were laughing to the point we were shocked at how naturally funny this movie actually was.
Everything I mentioned so far failed to even touch on the bad-ass action and cool superhero aspects, as these are actually the least important parts. What made this movie great was not the typical superhero stuff, or the addition of Iron Man, but the absolutely excellent story and writing that truly showed us the truest of Peter Parker and Spider-Man.
The characters, story development, and charisma are what made this movie so enjoyable, as the bonus bad-ass Stark Spider-suit and action sequences, are just another add on to how enjoyable this movie was.
Unlike the expectation I had of this being another typical Marvel flick and not much of a Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man: Homecoming will make you realize how much of a truly classic and deserving Spider-Man film this really is.
THE BAD:
Let me start by saying there is no bad of this movie. Spider-Man: Homecoming was almost flawless in every regard, to the point that saying there is any bad to this movie is just being some nit-picky jerk.
But since so many of today’s movie goers are nit-picky jerks, I guess I will try to find a flaw in this film. For one, there was a point or two that did feel a little bit long or stretched out. This was of course to truly develop the entire story (as the movie so excellently did), but it does take it’s toll in you wanting to see the best meat of the movie.
There was a scene where I was so angsty to see what is going to happen with the main part of this movie, that the little side action scene, felt as if it was a bit too lengthy for what I was really trying to see. . .
There, I said it, that was really hard to actually figure out, but that was the only nit-picky downside of this movie I could find.
THE VERDICT:
Spider-Man:Homecoming is a near flawless reboot of one of the most popular superheroes in Hollywood, as Jon Watts truly gives us one of the best and most realistic Spider-Man movies ever created.
The acting talents of Tom Holland show beyond measure, as he is going to definitely be the best Spider-Man yet, while his surrounding cast (including Michael Keaton) are just as charismatic. The writing of this movie excels in not only excellent story and character development, but in making this feel like the truest Spider-Man movie (and Peter Parker) we have ever seen.
The comedy feels original as it is some of Marvel’s greatest, while the scenes (especially in high-school) and day to day city life, are to live (or die) for.
As a die-hard DC fan, I have to say hats off to Marvel as this may be one of the best movies I have seen this year.
