Looks like the Tekken movie is moving forward and has found its lead. Luke Goss will star as Steve Fox, and it looks like the storyline will revolve around him.
Hellboy II villain, Luke Goss, just announced on his MySpace page that he had signed to star as Steve Fox. The character’s first appearance was in Tekken 4; Fox was a British boxer who was robbed of his memory and was on a search for answers about his past.
Doug just loves this game, and I have to admit that I was always a big fan of the fighting games. However, I wish they would stop trying to make indepth stories out of them. It just tempts Hollywood to create it into a movie.
The only “story” in these fighting games is presented in very short clips while the next level loads implying that you are the best fighter in the world, and you wont be stopped on your mission to stop the badguy, prove you have balls, or take over the world (by winning a MMA tournament?) Why are the heads of International Criminal Organizations holding tournaments in which their diabolical leader is in the running for an asswhooping by the hero?
The only way I can see this as a movie is to leave the tournament part out of it. The only fighter movie to do that right was Mortal Combat and it was still a super cheesefest. Make this an action film revolving around the loose backstory of one of the characters and try to pretend you are not attaching the Tekken name to it to garner some familiarity with the action script you bought and butchered to fit the game genre.
I am going to make a fighting game with the coolest looking badass fighters EVER, and give them NO story. Wait. If it is popular Hollywood will still buy the rights to it and make a movie out of it.
