Doug got a chance to see Forgetting Sarah Marshall here at the SXSW film festival the other day and he just loved it (you can check out his review here). That project was written by the star of the film Jason Segel and was directed by Nick Stoller. Well, it appears Disney thinks these are the guys to pen and direct the next Muppets movie!
Variety Magazine gives us this:
In “Sarah Marshall” Segel’s character writes a “Dracula” musical performed by puppets. Those cloth creatures were custom-made by the Henson puppeteers, and the experience emboldened Segel to pitch his concept for a Muppets movie when he was invited in for a general meeting with exec Kristin Burr. Segel got a deal in the room and enlisted Stoller to co-write and direct the project.
This seems like an odd marriage to me. I mean come on… are the guys who just did Sarah Marshall really the right people to be doing a Muppets movie?!?! All I can say is that Segel must have made one hell of an impression in that meeting he had with the Disney folks.
On a side note, I LOVE the muppets and I miss them dearly. I’m open to just about anything that brings them back to the screen… but like I said this just doesn’t seem like the right fit to me.
