Meg Returns?

SharkclosemkThe giant shark movie may be back on track! We get the following news about Meg’s possible resurrection thanks to our friends at moviehole:

Steve Alten, writer of the giant-Shark book “MEG”, tells The Los Angeles Time (in a terrific article about the movie) that he’s a little disappointed that Hollywood hasn’t been gung-ho to make a movie out of his tale (despite the fact that Disney’s Hollywood Pictures and then New Line Cinema each developed the project but ultimately passed on producing it) – noting that he thought “Meg 4 : Back for More” would be in theaters by now.

New Line said they pulled the plug on the film after two-and-a-half-years of developing it because “The script needed a lot of work; it was very expensive; and we did not choose the director or producers, who were already attached”. But is third time a charm for MEG? Apelles Publishing Inc. of Abington, Va., has optioned the rights from Alten with veteran Hollywood producers Lawrence Gordon (“Die Hard”) and Lloyd Levin (“Boogie Nights”), along with Virginia-based film financing consultant Belle Avery, set to produce. Will the trio be able to get it up this time?

I am pumped about Meg. A film about a giant shark that terrorizes the oceans of the earth is a fable that I will stand in line for. We talked about Meg on the TMB: Uncut a number of times and all of us were excited about this one. We even suggested a sequel to this film: Snakes On A Shark.

I can understand why this project may be running into trouble, whenever water is involved – movies get expensive. If the film ends up costing as much as a Spiderman film, you better hope that you have a shark that will draw at the box office. I will not lie, if the movie is half as good as what I am hoping for – I will probably go 3 times. I love giant animal films, and we need more of them. Giant bats, ants, spiders, geese – who cares, just give me a larger than life animal that turns on humans and I will be tickled.

I will not hold my breath for this project because it still has more hoops to jump through, but I welcome these developments and hoe for the best.
