Spike Lee has decided to bring his partner in advertising to the big screen. We hear wind if a Michael Jordan biopic thanks to the professionals at Variety:
Spike Lee is set to shoot a feature-length documentary about Michael Jordan. Helmer told a Cannes crowd that he hopes to bring the basketball legend to the fest with the pic next year. The NBA is financing the docu, with Lee’s 40 Acres & a Mule Filmworks shingle producing.
Jordan docu will include extensive unseen footage shot by NBA cameras during the final two years in Jordan’s career, the 2001-02 and 2002-03 seasons. Lee and Jordan previously collaborated on a series of Nike TV commercials. “Mike wants to come to Cannes, so hopefully we will be here next year,” Lee said.
Well this picture should be well received. Michael Jordan had an insane following of fans while he played; and the respect for the man and his accomplishments has not dimmed since. When basketball fans talk about Jordan, it’ s as close to the Canadian insanity surrounding Wayne Gretzky that I have seen.
I am glad Spike Lee is behind this film, and that Jordan himself is alive for reference. With the input of Jordan and the Vision of Lee, I have full confidence that this film will be a must see (even for sports haters like myself).
