It seems that the political hoopla surrounding films lately has reached a silly point. First Isreal bans the word Sex in Sex and the City, Russia calls for a boycott of Indiana Jones for offending Communists, and now it seems Sharon Stone shot her mouth off and the owner of one of the biggest Chinese cinemas took offense to it and has banned her films from his theaters.
Sharon Stone has annoyed the owner of the leading Chinese cinema chain to the point where he’s pledged not to show her films. What did she say? She said that the recent earthquake in China may have been “karma” — cosmic justice for the way China has treated the Tibetans.
With 5 films coming out that are not getting a lot of interest or buzz yet anyways, I don’t know that this is such a big deal. By the time her next film, The Year of Getting to Know Us comes out in October this will likely be forgotten.
But all that aside, what the hell was she thinking? Even if she DID think that there was some sort of karma for the tragedy that happened, why the hell would you say that out loud??
Some celebrities don’t realize just how the media hangs on their every word. No matter what they say, someone somewhere will report it. Saying something like this is just downright silly.
If they do continue to ban her films over this, I wouldn’t blame them. However, I also think it is almost juvenile to hold this over her head. He would have been just as effective in saying publicly that he thought her statement was insensitive and ludicrous.
Banning her films doesn’t do much. If anyone did want to go see them they could easily pick it up at a different chain, or rent it.
