It looks like the Iron Man is cleaning up at the domestic box office. We get wind of Tony Stark’ s 300 million dollar milestone thanks to our friends at comingsoon:
Marvel Studios’ Iron Man (distributed by Paramount Pictures) will become the first 2008 film to cross the $300 million mark domestically on Thursday.
Among summer 2008’s other big openers, Paramount’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is another clear $300 million candidate, with $279.5 million through Tuesday. “Skull” has also grossed $359.5 million internationally for a worldwide total of $638.9 million. Iron Man has grossed $250 million internationally for a worldwide total of more than $550 million.
Iron Man was a fantastic comic book film and I look forward to the sequel. I am glad that this B-List Marvel superhero has been thrust into the spotlight and given the attention that he deserves. My hope is that the same sort of magic that struck with Iron Man will strike anew with Captain America and Thor. If all of the Avengers have well received solo films, their team movie should launch right into glory!
I know comic book films have been doing well for a while now, but to see Iron Man holding its own against Indy is alarming. Geek culture continues to be mined for outstanding profits. I don’ t think we will see the end of superhero films any time soon, but as long as they are entertaining – I will gladly watch them without complaint.
