Canadian native Nia Vardalos once charmed her way into our lives with My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and she once again will be educating us on Greek Culture in My Life in Ruins. Recently Fox Searchlight has agreed to distrute the film in 3 major markets.
The Donald Petrie-directed film, which co-stars Richard Dreyfuss, Harland Williams and Rachel Dratch, centers on a travel guide (Vardalos) who rediscovers her mojo as she leads tourists around Greece.
I am a big Vardalos fan because she is wonderfully likeable with that tiny bit of extrovertedness that you can still tolerate. She abounds in energy and is just so genuine in her roles.
It was sad that the charm of My Big Fat Greek Wedding didnt translate well enough into the TV Series My Big Fat Greek Life (which only saw 7 episodes made) but I did like her followup feature film Connie and Carla. As attractive as I think Nia is, she actually made for a very convincing drag queen. She played one half of a stage duo that were women masquerading as men who dress like women. Go figure.
I think her genuine personality and her natural ability to make you want to cheer her on will do well in My Life In Ruins.
