Next up in the never ending groups and associations to hand out film awards is The Washington, DC Area Film Critics Association. This obviously may prompt the question “Just how many film critics does just Washington need?”. But I digress. Here is their list of this year’s winners:
Best Film – Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Focus)
Best Director – Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind)
Best Actor – Jamie Foxx (Ray)
Best Actress – Imelda Staunton (Vera Drake)
Best Supporting Actor – Jamie Foxx (Collateral)
Best Supporting Actress – Cate Blanchett (The Aviator)
Best Acting Ensemble – Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Focus)
Best Screenplay, Original – Charlie Kaufman (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind)
Best Screenplay, Adapted – Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor (Sideways)
Best Foreign Language Film – Maria Full of Grace (Fine Line)
Best Animated Film – The Incredibles (Buena Vista)
Best Documentary – Fahrenheit 9/11 (Lions Gate)
Wow, those DC guys really liked Eternal Sunshine. So did I, but I didn’t think it was best picture (or in the top 3). The most interesting thing on the list is Foxx winning for both best actor and best supporting actor. I’ve heard some rumblings about him possibly snagging both trophies at the Oscars this year… but honestly, while I think he did pretty darn well in Collateral, I didn’t think he was that good in it. Oh well… the most beautiful thing about film is the pure subjectivity of it.
Special thanks to Willie Waffle for the heads up.
