Netflix and the Guinness Book Of World Records are teaming up to set records and celebrate film in the Popcorn Bowl. We get news of this endurance contest from our friends at cinematical:
Between October 2nd and 7th, eight competitors will attempt to cast the new Guinness World Record for most consecutive hours spent watching movies right in the middle of Times Sqaure, and only one will walk away with the title. Oh, and a lifetime subscription to sponsor Netflix. And the inaugural “Popcorn Bowl” trophy. Not to mention $10,000 in cash.
Contestants will watch 56 movies straight (titles TBD), with ten-minute breaks in between, and medical professionals will apparently ensure that those competing are actually “watching” as opposed to “staring” at the screen.
This is a crazy event. Stating up for 56 movies is no small feat, my strategy would be to eat chocolate covered espresso beans through the entirety of the event. A caffeine crash will put you to sleep fast, but a constant measured supply should keep you buzzing like a trucker running from the Black Dog.
I have said before that I think Netflix is a company to watch. I like the way they way they do business and consider them to be a driving force behind innovation, convenience and accessibility in the rental market.
An annual contest like this is a great way to advertise, and just down right fun. Slackers start your engines, today your life of inaction may pay dividends!
