I admit that I’m one of the few people out here that really appreciated “Superman Returns”. No, it wasn’t the Superman movie most people (myself included) expected or were hoping for… but Brian Singer took the film in a totally different direction, making Superman Returns a character study of this person who walks as a god amongst men, and I for one really appreciated the approach. Yes, it would have been nice to see him throw a punch in the film, but I still really enjoyed it.
The one thing above all others that I liked about Superman returns was the huge pleasant surprise of Brandon Routh’s performance as the Man of Steel. He completely nailed it (no pun intended to the post below this one). He was so good that I went so far as to say the blaphemous… he was better than Reeve. Don’t throw eggs… that’s just my opinion.
Anyway, with all the upheaval going on around the next Superman project, many people have assumed that Brandon Routh was off like most of the other people from the last Superman project. Well… it appears that may not be true at all. Our friend Kellvin over at Latino Review recently ran into the President of DC comics and had a little chat with him including a FANTASTIC bit of news:
“So Paul, what the fuck is happening with Superman?” Well not in those words actually. Paul looked over both shoulders like he was about to score some basura and said that things are still brewing. In fact, he told me that “Last week Brandon Routh has come around the offices in New York and Los Angeles as of late to talk about Superman and what we want to do”……blah blah blah! At first I thought it was the Apple Martini I was drinking but I soon realized that I just heard a bombshell go off in my brain! Brandon? He did say Brandon Routh was coming around talking about Superman! Why the hell would they be talking to Brandon if he was not going to be part of the reboot? Because he’s still in the mix!!!
If this means what it looks like it means, it is indeed JOYOUS news! Routh is a fantastic Superman and I for one would LOVE to see him return in the tights! I’d also like to see Spacey back as Luthor, as long as there was another villain for Superman to… you know… actually fight too. Other than those two they can recast the whole thing as far as I’m concerned.
I’ve no doubt the next Superman flick will be more along the lines of a traditional comic book movie, and that’s fine too. As long as Routh is back I’m happy.
