Marc Guggenheim, co-writer for Green Lantern is a sucker for a good easter egg, so we are certain to see tidbits of crossovers. In a conversation he deviated from the core script saying his mind wanders to finding ways to fit in cameos like Superman’s alter ego Clark Kent.
And while there’s already a lot of speculation over who would play Green Lantern — Ryan Gosling? Matthew Settle? David Boreanaz? — what about Clark Kent, who will make a small cameo? Will the part go to someone already established on film or television to be the Man of Steel, like Brandon Routh or Tom Welling?
“There were rumors that Tom Welling would have a cameo in ‘Batman Begins’ as a young Clark Kent, to meet up with a young Bruce Wayne,” Guggenheim noted. “But you have to be careful when you do things like that, because it sounds great in concept, but when you sit down to watch it, it poses the danger of pulling you out of the film.”
As much as I like the idea of a Superman cameo, I would hope that they would use Brandon Routh. Not just because he was already the movie Superman, but because they are still hoping to use him in the rebooted movie style Superman movies that will tie in better with Batman and the upcoming Green Lantern.
Putting Tom Welling in the role would pander to Smallville fans, but it would certainly pull you out of the movie and make you think that this has something to do with the TV series. I am a huge fan of the TV series, but I accepted LONG ago that they are not sticking to canon with Smallville, and using Welling as the big blue boyscout, even in a cameo would distract from the movie and make it something it is not. Short of Smallville spinning off into a Superman story with flights and tights, we will never see Welling as supes.
Then there is talk about the names he is throwing around as potential Lanterns. I think that David Boreanaz would make a fantastic Hal Jordan, so he is my pick. However, Gosling is a strong contender since I feel so strongly about getting a quality actor. Not that I think Boreanaz couldn’t do it, but I think Gosling is fantastic.
