Earlier we heard reports that Mickey Rourke, hot on his comeback trail after the acclaim of The Wrestler was to take on the role of the Crimson Dynamo in Iron Man 2. But now we catch wind from Robert Downey Jr himself that the claims may have been exaggerated.
When asked if Mickey Rourke would be playing Russian nemesis Crimson Dynamo, Downey rebutted with
“That’s actually incorrect”
Okay. Next obvious question: Would Rourke then be playing Whiplash? Downey’s response:
“I can neither confirm nor deny that… Or maybe it’s some semblance of both. Here, I can tell you everything about the story except I won’t give away the ending. The nerd stuff is top-drawer security.”
I’m not quite sure what that means but I think I’d prefer one or the other. Either way, we now know that Rourke will not be the Crimson Dynamo. In the interview, Downey also goes on to say the following about the story of the sequel:
“It’s one thing to say you’re Iron Man; it’s another to hold that responsibility… If that sounds like a familiar theme, trust me, it’s not. This film is three times more fun and strange. We’re going real far out this time. It’s going to be good. I wouldn’t lie to you.”
Downey is the cats ass! He knows that fans and the buzz on this movie will make or break it and he is never shy about sharing the finer details. He also isn’t stupid so he knows where the line is, so we are not going to get more until they are ready to tell us what is going on.
Considering the low price tag his appearance was going to earn him, perhaps his role is minor and therefore doesn’t deserve a big ticket tag.
I don’t know that Rourke is ready to be writing his own payroll just yet so he shouldn’t be crying about a paycheque, but we don’t even know who he will be playing yet.
