Hey, remember that guy who dominated teen romance comedies all through the late 90s and early this decade before taking on a role in Scooby Doo and then vanishing? What was that guy’s name? Right! Freddy Prinze Jr.
Well he is attempting a comeback of sorts and I only found out about it because he will be staring in a US Remake of the Brit Superhero comedy “No Heroics”
Once again a U.S. network is mining British TV for ideas, with ABC set to bring a remake of ITV’s No Heroics to North America. The series, created by Drew Pearce, focuses on the exploits of a group of costumed superheroes during their off-hours.
Freddie Prinze Jr. will star in the American version, along with Paul Campbell, Eliza Coupe and Arielle Kebbel. Apparently they are changing the names of the heroes and their powers, since Campbell will play Chillout, “a Canadian-born superhero who can freeze small objects”
The Original Brit series is genuinely funny, and looks at the less heroic side of these misfit superheroes, their interactions and their insecurities. The set of the show is mostly in a pub frequented by costumed crusaders, called “The Fortress” (easter eggs gallore for comic book fans) and the show gets its name from the scribbled warning that patrons are restricted to “No Heroics” in the bar.
It kind of has a Mystery Men vibe to it, and I wonder if they will be able to capture the charm of the show like they did when translating the Office to American audiences. And hopefully Freddy Prinze Jr will be able to surprise us and shed the stigma of his teen comedy typecast that seemed to bury him into obscurity.
Watch the trailer for the UK version:
I suspect they will make the girl hotter, and ease off on the cussing, but I hope they keep most of it.
