It was with great joy that many people heard the news Brett Ratner was officially off as director of the new Conan movie. This let a void in the director’s chair. Who would step in and direct the mighty worshiper of Crom?
The first name added to the list was that of James McTeigue (director of V for Vendetta) which is a name I would be more than happy with if he ends up getting the gig. Since then a number of other names have been mentioned as in the running. They are:
– Phil Joanou (State of Grace, Gridiron Gang)
Would be a very interesting choice. I’ve enjoyed his films… never done anything like Conan before, but that’s fine.
– Neil Marshall (Doomsday, The Descent)
Ummm… I’d have to say “no”. The Descent is, in my opinion, the best horror movie of the last 15 years, but that might have been a fluke for Marshall who followed up with the DREADFUL movie “Doomsday”. So I’d feel a bit uneasy about him taking the chair.
– Marcus Nispel (Pathfinder, Friday the 13th)
Not a fan of this choice. Pathfinder was beyond terrible and the Friday the 13th film was “meh” at best
– Christophe Gans (Silent Hill)
I have no idea why, but Silent Hill actually has some fans… but not many. To me it was terrible and I’d be very hesitant to see him get the job.
All in all, I’d still feel best about James McTeigue taking over the project. He’s done a lot of adventure with mythology films before (having been an assistant director on the Matrix Films as well) and did a fantastic job with V. After that I’d be fine with Joanou too.
So what about you? Out of these listed directors (there may be more) which one would you put in the chair if you were in charge?
