To all of my dear America friends, repeat after me: “Hockey is the greatest and more pure expression of athleticism and sports that mankind has ever, or will ever, conceive of.” There, don’t you feel a little bit smarter just for saying those holy and wise words?
Kevin Smith is one of my favorite guys in the movie business. Don’t get me wrong… I’m not saying he’s one of the best filmmakers… but certainly one of my favorite guys (I don’t like all his movies, but I do have Clerks 2 on my top 10 all time best comedies list). And now Kevin is fulfilling his destiny. Nay, the destiny of the film industry as a whole. He’s making a movie about Hockey!
The film will be based on the song: “Hit Somebody (The Hockey Song).” The good folks over at Worst Previews give us this:
The new movie will be set in the late 1970s within the World Hockey Association, before those teams were absorbed into the National Hockey League. “It takes place during the last gasp of the goon era of hockey when it was all about fighting,” Smith said.
There will certainly be lots of humor in the script, but Smith envisions the film as being more dramatic in nature and possibly an Oscar-winner. “I never once thought about winning awards or anything, but that movie I think can do it,” he said. “If I play my cards right and we get the right people in it, it could be an award-type movie.”
Damn skippy this movie could win awards Kevin! It’ll eclipse the record of 11 Oscars held by Return of the King EASY. I’m think 39 Oscars. Yes… that means they’ll have to create new categories just to give to this movie.
Now go watch some sweet NHL playoff action.
