Jan de Bont on monster shark Meg

Meg.jpgThe upcoming release of another Jaws anniversary DVD boxset looks like it will coincide nicely with the production of another huge shark movie. According to Hollywood Reporter through MovieWeb:

New Line Cinema has picked up the rights to Meg, Steve Alten’s horror adventure about a prehistoric shark, with Jan de Bont on board to direct.

The story features a 80-foot-long prehistoric shark — scientifically known as Carcharodon megalodon and believed by some to be an ancestor of the great white shark — which terrorizes the California coast. Two men from opposite points of view are forced to come together to neutralize the threat.

Don’t expect the same calibre of Jaws then, try mixing some Speed with Twister and a man eating monster shark, and we’re on the right tracks. Not subtle, but big, loud and fun.

Strangely though the book has gone on to become a trilogy…oh how apt. Bets on there being three films if this even has the faintest whiff of doing well? Surely the topic’s been more than done to death with the ever decreasing quality of the Jaws series?
