There has been a bunch of chatter going on around the webshere the last 24 hours about a claim made by Steve Schklair, the CEO of 3ality Digital Systems. Schklair says that Peter Jackson has told him that he will only make movies using 3D technology from now on. Ok.
This isn’t that big of a surprise since Jackson is a pretty visionary and forward thinking filmmaker. However, it just brings up for me, yet again, this issue of 3D in movies and how I see them as a novelty at best… a distraction at worst.
Don’t get me wrong… there’s nothing wrong with a 3D movie from time to time. The novelty of it can be a lot of fun… in moderation that is. But for me personally (and I know I’m in the minority here), it’s just a gimmick that distracts from the movie itself, and something else that the filmmakers are thinking about when they should be using that time and energy for making a better overall movie with… you know… story and performance and pesky little things like that.
I just saw the new Pixar film “UP” a couple of times. Both times in 3D (just because that was the next showing when I arrived at the theater). And both times I wished I could just take the glasses off and watch the movie for what it was. I felt the same way watching Beowulf last year. Yes, things get to pop off the screen at you… but who cares? The picture doesn’t look as good looking through the glasses, it gets a bit annoying and the movie becomes more about the gimmick than the story.
But whatever, like I said I know I’m in the minority here.
