I’ve been pretty passive about sharing casting announcements lately as they really aren’t my favorite things to write about. This particular casting announcement comes hot on the heels of me watching ‘R.E.D.’ on cable last night so the movie and excitement are rejuvenated and fresh in my mind. Deadline is reporting that Catherine Zeta-Jones and G.I. Joe: Retalliation star Byung Hun Lee are joining Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Mary-Louise Parker and Helen Mirren in the forthcoming sequel to the action comedy. The sequel also found itself a new director in Dean “Fun with Dick and Jane” Parisot and brings back writers Erich and Jon Hoeber, who wrote the first film.
I typically enjoy the performances by Catherine Zeta-Jones and the fact that she’s gorgeous doesn’t hurt at all either, and the inclusion of Byun-Hun Lee is a welcome surprise and hopefully an indication of further penetration in the American market for the Korean actor.
I’m a bit bummed that Mary-Louise Parker is returning for this film. As much as I love(d) the ‘Weeds’ star portraying “Nancy” on the hit show, I really didn’t like her being “Nancy” in R.E.D. That is to say she didn’t really develop a new character for the film and mainly continued to the be the slightly ditzy and very passe character that she is on Showtime. Hell, even my non movie-critic friends commented on her performance/appearance in the movie when I re-watched and they don’t comment about performances of an actor/actress like I do so I know it’s not just me.
R.E.D. 2 is scheduled to be released on August 2, 2013. I’ll let you know of any other developments that come along between now and then.
