I can’t wait to see the nerdrage over this news. Guy Ritchie has signed on to direct LOBO.
For those of you unfamiliar, Lobo is the badass cigar smoking super strong, nigh invulnerable space biker bounty hunter of the DC Universe. Never heard of him? Well unless you are a die hard comic reader, you probably havent. If you are a die hard, you might not care.
the movie will be a special effects heavy PG-13 and not the hard R rating you would think a faithful (and successful) adaptation of Lobo would need. Are we to blame Watchmen’s sudden drop off in audience figures and final $185 million worldwide taking?
And then there’s the news that Guy Ritchie – he of Lock Stock, Snatch, Revolver and Rock N’Rolla fame – will direct.
Now let me predict the fanboy nerdrage here:
Lobo needs to be rated R Wrong.
Lets remember that Lobo in the comic books, that was so badass, so violent and socially inappropriate does so using words like “Fraggin Bastich” and all of this is presented in a comic book that you don’t have to be 18 to buy. If they could illustrate how dark and serious the Joker is in a PG13 film, I am sure they could do it with Lobo.
My biggest contention with Lobo is also my only hope for the film.
The character is flimsy. He has no story. He is a badass who kicks ass. Punch, kick, big Michael Bay explosion. Roll credits.
So this is my only hope for the character. To make him look badass with a PG13 will require storytelling and effective visuals. So with any luck the writers will actually come up with something remotely interesting and we could have a good film here.
If I don’t see some glimmers of that, Lobo won’t make my viewing list. The character is completely devoid of appeal for me.
