What is a Sci-Fi comedy you ask? I guess the easiest example that pops to mind is the 2004 Simon Pegg and Nick Frost film ‘Shaun of the Dead‘, and more recently the duo’s most recent film ‘Paul’. Shaun of the Dead was the first film in the Frost/Pegg/Wright planned trilogy that’s been coined Blood and Ice Cream trilogy. The trio have finally begun to divulge information with the folks over Empire giving some insight intothe upcoming final entry in the trilogy as well as a production and film release window.
Speaking with Empire, Pegg said that the film involves “a crawl through twelve pubs, culminating in the final one, which is The World’s End,” with Wright adding that the pic is “as much about where you grew up as the people you grew up with.”
Empire pressed the scribes for what we can expect from The World’s End:
“Hard to say,” says Wright, before deciding. “It’s a sci-fi comedy.” “Social sci-fi,” adds Pegg. “Social science-fiction,” agrees Wright, warming to the task. “Look it up on Wikipedia and then bone up on John Christopher and John Wyndham.”
Wikipedia: Social science fiction is a term used to describe a subgenre of science fiction concerned less with technology and space opera and more with sociological speculation about human society. In other words, it “absorbs and discusses anthropology”, and speculates about human behavior and interactions.
Official synopsis: 20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hell bent on trying the drinking marathon again. They are convinced to stage an encore by mate Gary King, a 40-year old man trapped at the cigarette end of his teens, who drags his reluctant pals to their home town and once again attempts to reach the fabled pub, The World’s End. As they attempt to reconcile the past and present, they realize the real struggle is for the future, not just theirs but humankind’s. Reaching The World’s End is the least of their worries.
Everything sounds amazing so far and looks to be a film right up their alley. For our non-British jargon understanding audience a Pub Crawl is what we in America call ‘bar hopping’. With that official synopsis explainign that the film involves the struggle for mankind’s future I think it would be safe to assume that this is no ordinary pub crawl and can be expected to have some clever and witty surprises peppered throughout the film. Can’t wait to see production start and who they cast within the film!
