Keira Knightley has slipped from “It Girl” status to “that girl from the pirates movies” and is now one more film short on her resume.
Knightley’s assumed involvement in the remake of My Fair Lady (musical version of George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion) has come to an end as she removes herself from consideration for the role.
The reason for her departure is that she apparently felt that the project was taking too long to get off the ground.
John Madden (“Shakespeare In Love,” “The Debt”) has signed on to direct the film with various names popping up as candidates, the latest being the likes of Carey Mulligan, Gemma Arterton and Emily Blunt.
When I read this news I assumed she must have already been working on the film. Its been forever since they announced it was happening. And while pen never hit paper, it was assumed that Knightley would be taking the lead role.
If not Knightley (who is charmingly perfect for these roles) I would love to see Emily Blunt or Gemma Arterton take them on. Personally I think Arterton is a hidden gem and has yet to explode into major films despite being a Bond girl and in the upcoming Prince of Persia and Clash of the Titans.
The only thing that might hurt Arterton’s chances is her role in Wuthering Heights, another romantic period peice that will be filming this year.
