The squeaking in the House of Mouse is generating some rumours, and while they will stay classified as such until a statement is released, it seems that Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides will start shooting this summer.
Also mentioned was Tim Burton’s next epic might just be a live action CG mix remake of Sleeping Beauty.
Harry at Ain’t It Cool News says he’s “heard” that Tim Burton may be taking on Sleeping Beauty next. But it won’t be a straight remake, apparently his semi-live-action version (like Alice on Wonderland) will be told from the point of view of Maleficent, the self-proclaimed “Mistress of All Evil” who curses Princess Aurora to “prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die” before the sun sets on her 16th birthday. In fact, it may even be called simply “Maleficent”.
If they are going to remake something like Sleeping Beauty, I like that they are at least going to be creative with the approach. Retelling the story might be visually stunning with Burton ripping visuals out of his twisted mind, but we have seen it. Remakes have a stigma already, but a new telling of the story in a new way would certainly offer some appeal to me.
If it does get made, I predict Helena Bonham Carter for Malificent. She’s a hauntingly beautiful woman and accomplished actor, but more importantly Burton uses his wife in just about everything he does, so it’s likely to happen.
Should be interesting to see how Burton’s Dark Shadows (staring Johnny Depp) which has been rumoured to be filming this year fits into all of this. Is Depp going from PR for Alice to Dark Shadows, to Pirates to Malificent all this year?
