THE GENERAL IDEA

David spends his days cutting grass and his nights smoking it while desperately trying to keep his superhero fantasies alive. When Robyn, his aspiring fashion designer girlfriend makes him a Halloween Costume of his original character Apama, it doesnt take David long to hit the streets and begin blundering towards disaster.

THE GOOD

There is an interesting story of a man crossing his own reality of failure and escaping into the powerful fantasy of his comic book character. The worse things get for David, the better they look for Apama, the very simple and self sufficient superhero.

Perren’s David character is played well in his embarassing Apama costume, as he doesn’t automatically become this superpower. He is still David. And that becomes painfully obvious.

THE BAD

Now while the story was interesting and had a lot of potential its delievery didn’t. I liked David when he was Apama, and watching him try to convince himself that Apama could be a reality was a train wreck, but still enjoyable. The overall acting in this was very wooden and read. Not natural at all and it distracts.

The real movie is only played out in the last 20 minutes of the film when David hits rock bottom and the last straw breaks. The rest of the film is light casual interactions that are painful with the poor acting. Not even the exotic pretty Robyn can distract the eye from the bad acting going on.

It all sets the stage for the big reveal at the end that pulls it all together and helps David get his life together. I see what they were tyring to do, but the setup is so boring and uneventful, littered with characters you don’t buy into.

OVERALL

There was a good story to tell here, not sure they did it all that well. I did enjoy the last 20 minutes or so when it all was worth it, but getting there is a bit of a mess.

With other films featuring everyday people trying to become comic inspired supers, it is a good time for this to come out.

I give Hero Tomorrow a 5 out of 10

Hero Tomorrow is available on DVD, but was originally screened at the Fantasia Film Festival and NYComicCon in 2007.
