With the announcement of Chris Evans as Captain America his appearance at Wondercon suddenly took more interest. They let him talk about his other film coming up (The Losers) but then after interview questions he talked about Captain America.
Why did Chris Evans want to play Captain America?
“I think Marvel is doing a lot of good things right now, and it’s a fun character. Even if it wasn’t a comic book. I think the story of Steve Rogers is great. He’s a great guy. Even if it was just a script about anybody, I would probably want to do it. So it wasn’t necessarily about the comic itself. He’s a great character. He’s a great character to play. He just happens to be a comic book character.”
As we’re all well aware of, there existed an extreme amount of rumors and speculation surrounding the extensive casting process for the title character in The First Avenger: Captain America. While Evans was a late contender in the game, after every young male actor in the world auditioned for the part, he knew about the buzz and tried to avoid it.
“I try and stay away from all that. That’s almost none of my business… It’s a slippery slope when you start reading that stuff. I have enough trouble doing press. You end up living in your own head a lot more than you’d like to and you start reading that stuff and it’s a dangerous game to play. So, for the most part, I tried to stay out of it.”
Someone even asked him if they’ll color his hair blond to match the Steve Rogers from the comic books.
“I don’t know it’s up to them. I have no idea… It’s just happened. I haven’t talked to anybody, so I have no idea.”
Something tells me he thinks Cap is a great character. Just a feeling I get.
He remains aloof and holds his sanity, but at least it looks like he will have some respect for the character. I remain positive about the casting.
