I didn’t have many expectations of the first Sahara film with the adventures of Dirk Pitt. And really, it delivered just that… not much. However, it was kinda fun and I thought it had franchise potential. With the exception of Penélope Cruz, the rest of the cast was pretty solid and Matthew McConaughey pulled off the whole dashing Indiana Jones type hero role pretty well.
Now, with 18 books of source material to draw from, director Breck Eisner says they are seriously looking at doing another Dirk Pitt adventure. The good folks over at MovieHole give us this:
“Well, yes, we sure hope to be doing one and I think a lot of that depends on actually how we do on DVD”, he says. “You know, we’ve done well box office and we want to continue to do well on DVD. And if all things do go well, because it’s an expensive movie, then we will do another one.
“I know they have two or three of the books under contract. But I’m not supposed to tell anyone which ones they are yet, sadly.” Eisner says the entire cast is contracted – Matthew McConaughey, Steve Zahn, Bill Macy, and Rainn Wilson – to come back, and he’s putting his hand up to return to the director’s chair.
I’d like to see another one… but I also hope the plot and story are a lot better than the first. There were way too many far fetched logic jumps the audience were expected to make, too many huge coincidences and the scale was just a bit too large for the characters we were seeing. It’s funny how much likable characters can make up for in a film.
