Blu Tuesday: New Releases May 4,2010

Last week was virtually devoid of notable releases with Avatar still dominating the shelves, so I didn’t bother with a report. But we are back this week with a listing of what’s out there in retail today.

Leap Year
When their four-year anniversary passes without a marriage proposal, Anna (Amy Adams) decides to take matters into her own hands. Investing in an Irish tradition that allows women to propose to men on February 29th, Anna decides to follow her boyfriend Jeremy (Adam Scott) to Dublin and get down on one knee herself.

I didnt care much for this movie, but Amy Adams is so infectious. Still wasn’t enough.

Nine
Nine is a vibrant and provocative musical that follows the life of world famous film director Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis) as he reaches a creative and personal crisis of epic proportion, while balancing the numerous women in his life including his wife (Marion Cotillard), his mistress (Penelope Cruz), his film star muse (Nicole Kidman), his confidant and costume designer (Judi Dench), a young American fashion journalist (Kate Hudson), the whore from his youth (Stacy “Fergie” Ferguson) and his mother (Sophia Loren).

I meant to get around to seeing this, but I already saw Chicago, so it will have to wait. Now I can rent it.

The Tooth Fairy
Dwayne Johnson is “The Tooth Fairy,” also known as Derek Thompson, a hard-charging hockey player whose nickname comes from his habit of separating opposing players from their bicuspids. When Derek discourages a youngster’s dreams, he’s sentenced to one week’s hard labor as a real tooth fairy, complete with the requisite tutu, wings and magic wand. At first, Derek “can’t handle the tooth”—bumbling and stumbling as he tries to furtively wing his way through strangers’ homes… doing what tooth fairies do. But as Derek slowly adapts to his new position, he begins to rediscover his own forgotten dreams.

Saw this for the sake of my kids, and all it did was remind me that while Johnson is great at action and family friendly films, he doesn’t always sign on with a winner.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is a fantastical morality tale, set in the present day. It tells the story of Dr. Parnassus and his extraordinary ‘Imaginarium’, a travelling show where members of the audience get an irresistible opportunity to choose between light and joy or darkness and gloom.

This one eluded me. I wanted to see it, but a family wedding interupted my advanced screening opportunity and a busy schedule thwarted my attempts to squeeze it in. Now I had to wait for the DVD, and this will get rented.

District 13 Ulitimatum
Two years have passed since elite police officer Damien Tomasso (Cyril Raffaelli) teamed up with reformed vigilante Leito (parkour originator David Belle) to save the notorious District 13, a racially charged ghetto populated by violent drug dealing gangs and vicious killers. Despite government promises to maintain order, the state of the district has deteriorated, and a group of corrupt cops and elected officials are conspiring to cause civil unrest in D13, looking for an excuse to raze the area and cash in on its redevelopment. Now Damian and Leito must join forces again, and use their mastery of martial arts and their unique physical skills to bring peace to the neighborhood by any means necessary… before a proposed nuclear air-strike wipes it off the map.

This looks like an amazing parkour martial arts film. It doesn’t even need a very good plot for all the visuals. I will rent it.

So is anything making your “must buy” list. I will be renting a few this week, but I wont be leaping to buy just yet.
