Could Avatar Break DVD Sales Record too?

Disney’s Finding Nemo holds the title of Most DVD Units Sold at 40million copies over the last 7 years. Avatar is already half way to that number after only 3 weeks of sales. Could Avatar trump that record too?

Worst Previews shares:

In less than three weeks, James Cameron’s “Avatar” has become the best-selling title ever in a comparable period, with almost 20 million copies sold worldwide. The film has also sold 6.2 million Blu-ray units, which is 31% of its disc sales (both DVD and Blu-ray). Usually Blu-ray represents only 7%-12% of all sales.

To show how impressive these numbers are, “The Dark Knight” took 18 months to sell 2.5 million Blu-ray units. “Avatar” sold 2.7 million units in just the first four days.

Now I find this interesting that Avatar is selling so well, but not surprising how many people went to see it in the theater. But that its selling nearly a third of its copies on Blu when typically its barely an eighth of DVD release sales.

And while many nay-sayers are bashing the record setting boxoffice saying its not accurate since 3D tickets cost more (therefore boosting the numbers) but consider that those tickets account for about 20% added to the ticket cost and if we were to blindly assume EVERY ticket sold was for a 3D viewing, it still has an adjusted rake of 2.1 billion dollars worldwide. Still enough to hold the worldwide title.

I do find it interesting that this home copy release doesn’t even feature a 3D option (though new 3D TV’s will adapt it quite well) and its still selling in droves with potential to break records.

Maybe it wasn’t the 3D element that is the sole credit to this film after all?

Perhaps a lot of people just like the movie.

I personally don’t own a copy yet, holding out for the special edition speculated to be released in November.
