Aging heroes are not done gracing the big screens just yet, and in a world of Justin Beiber’s and Hanna Montana’s I think older stars make for a nice balance. There must always be balance.
And that balance comes in the form of a new script just greenlit for the screen called Grudge Match – which pits two classic boxing stars against each other to settle once and for all who will win a contraversial conflict fifty years in the debating.
Warners has picked up Tim Kelleher’s pitch for GRUDGE MATCH, a story about two old boxers who return to the ring for one final match. How old are they? Well, the titular fight takes place FIFTY years after their original bout, hence why many are comparing the film to Clint Eastwood’s SPACE COWBOYS.
Let’s say each fighter was 18 during their initial fight (a biiiig lowball), that mean the MINIMUM age for each of these fighters would be 68, but more likely they’d be in their mid to late seventies, and I have to say, I can’t see very many actors pulling this off.
I am foggy on the idea of setting two 70 year old boxers against each other, like that is somehow going to settle the debate about who was the better boxer half a century earlier, but I like movies with older stars reliving the glory days, so this could be fun.
Tim Kelleher’s writing credits mostly include comedy, so I suspect the script wouldn’t be that serious. But who will star as the aging boxers?
Rourke could play one of them. He is in everything lately.
Who would you pick?
