Nolan has been caught monologing about Superman and I have to say I am encouraged. Not that Nolan has ever discouraged me!
“…What it is, while David Goyer and myself were putting together the story for another Batman film a few years ago, you know thrashing out where we might move on from The Dark Knight, we got stuck. We were just sitting there idly chatting and he said ‘by the way, I think I know how you approach Superman‘.. and he told me his take on it. I thought it was really tremendous. It was the first time I’ve been able to conceive of how you’d address Superman in a modern context I thought it was a really exciting idea. What you have to remember about Batman and Superman is that what makes them the best superhero characters there are, the most beloved after all this time, is the essence of who they were when they were created, when they were first developed. You can’t move too far away from that.”
What’s that now? Picturing Superman in a real world???
Could this be the inkling of trying to get Superman to have the tone of reality that we have come to love with Batman?
I have said it before and I will again. Despite Nolan saying that Superman can’t exist in Batman’s world I have always said if any scribe can figure a way to do it, it would be Nolan. It always sounded to me that the Superman “as we know it” can’t exist in Batman’s world. It is very possible that a rebooted Superman handled with the care and involvement of Nolan would work perfectly fine with Bats.
People have a hard time imagining that a world where Superman exists that Batman is at all interesting and vice versa. But they exist in the same comics, and Worlds Finest works just fine too. Because they make it work.
Nolan can make it work. He doesn’t have to direct Superman, but his hand in it means its steering in the right direction.
