Miramax almost got brought back from the dead when the Weinsteins proposed returning to the studio that they created, but that fell through and they walked away from the deal.
Now it seems that Rob Lowe and Tom Barrack have plans to bid on the studio.
The Weinsteins’ attempt to buy back the studio named for their parents fell apart in May, and now another buyer has swooped in, and it’s perhaps the last person you ever would have expected.
According to TMZ, Rob Lowe and business partner Tom Barrack are planning to buy the label, with a plan to create “a multi-platform media company, similar to DreamWorks.”
So that kind of came out of left field.
Rob Lowe huh? I could believe any number of deep pockets could take interest in the studio, but I didn’t think Rob Lowe would be on that list. I wonder if his partner Tom Barrack has pockets of appropriate depth.
It also makes me wonder why someone with ambitions to make the studio into something different wouldn’t just take their money and make themselves their own studio.
Guess that back library of independent titles is just too appealing to let sit there and collect dust.
