If things go well, it looks like the next person to play God on screen will be Betty White, and it will be a remake of the classic Oh, God made famous by the late George Burns.
The film shows God approaching a common grocery store employee would become the next voice of God to remind people to believe in him. The plot reflects the bible where Jesus recruited very common people to be his diciples.
Weintraub, who produced the 1977 film, has been trying to remake the movie for years, most recently with Ellen DeGeneres attached for the lead. It’s possible that casting White may push the project forward. A script, however, has yet to be written.
Some of my fondest memories of George Burns were because of these movies. I was born after his glory days and I always remember him as already being 80 years old.
I think Betty White would be awesome to see as God, even though it will piss off the fundamentalists to suggest God is a woman. Still, her charm and comedic timing will be a great asset if they get this version of the film off the ground.
I would very much like to see these happen.
