Jackass 3D set a fall record dethroning Scary Movie 3’s $48.1m openner, nearly cashing in what the previous two installements made on their debut weekends ($22.8m + $29m). I am sure the boost of ticket prices for 3D didn’t hurt.
Lets check out how the cookie crumbled as BoxOffice Mojo reports the estimates:
Jackass 3-D – $50,000,000 – Opening
Red – $22,500,000 – Opening
The Social Network – $11,000,000 – 3wks
Secretariat – $9,503,000 – 2wks
Life as We Know It – $9,200,000 – 2 wks
I dare to even call Jackass a “Movie” as it is essentially a series of elaborate violent youtube clips stitched together. The stupid things these people do to each other is drunken comedy (best enjoyed in a condition where logic and socially acceptable behaviour won’t interfere) and offers up the most base of laughs with a crotch shot to a midget… in 3D. I pray for humanity.
While Jackass is not my favourite thing, I was surprised to see it rake the big coins over this weekend. I saw RED and loved the crap out of it. I am seeing it again tomorrow.
After that The Social Network is holding on strong, and then what was left over from last week fills out the Top 5.
What did you see this weekend?
