Another week the retail shelves tease us with a return of those films we love or the chance at the ones we missed.
This week I have only one absolute buy, but its not a bad week. Check out some of the new releases:
Grown Ups
Five friends and former teammates (Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, Rob Schneider and David Spade) reunite years later to honor the passing of their childhood basketball coach. With their wives (Salma Hayek, Maria Bello, Maya Rudolph) and kids in tow, they spend the Fourth of July holiday weekend together at the lake house where they celebrated their championship years earlier. Picking up where they left off, they discover why growing older doesn’t mean growing up.
Predictable and many of the best lines were in the trailer. But still an alright film that showcases how funny these guys can be in supporting roles. I don’t see myself buying this one.
Scott Pilgrim vs The World – Check out our Review
Scott Pilgrim has never had a problem getting a girlfriend. It’s getting rid of them that proves difficult. From the girl who kicked his heart’s ass—and now is back in town—to the teenage distraction he’s trying to shake when Ramona rollerblades into his world, love hasn’t been easy. He soon discovers, however, his new crush has the most unusual baggage of all: a nefarious league of exes controls her love life and will do whatever it takes to eliminate him as a suitor.
As Scott gets closer to Ramona, he must face an increasingly vicious rogues’ gallery from her past—from infamous skateboarders to vegan rock stars and fearsomely identical twins. And if he hopes to win his true love, he must vanquish them all before it really is game over.
This truly is an epic movie of epicness. I had a crazy amount of fun with this in the theaters, and while not perfect it is a good time. Bought.
Ramona and Beezus
The adventures of young Ramona Quimby (Joey King) and her big sister Beezus (Selena Gomez) come to life in this all new film based on the best-selling books (over 30 million… and counting) by Beverly Cleary.
Ramona’s vivid imagination, boundless energy, and accident-prone antics keep everyone she meets on their toes. But her irrepressible sense of fun, adventure and mischief come in handy when she puts her mind to helping save her family’s home
A little out of my demographic, but I am sure it will be worth a rent for the kidlets.
Charlie StCloud
Accomplished sailor Charlie St. Cloud (Zac Efron) has the adoration of mother Claire (Kim Basinger) and little brother Sam (Charlie Tahan), as well as a college scholarship that will lead him far from his sleepy Pacific Northwest hometown. But his bright future is cut short when a tragedy strikes and takes his dreams with it.
After his high-school classmate Tess (Amanda Crew) returns home unexpectedly, Charlie grows torn between honoring a promise he made four years earlier and moving forward with newfound love. And as he finds the courage to let go of the past for good, Charlie discovers the soul most worth saving is his own.
This looked pretty impressive, and if Efron is as good in this as he was in Me and Orson Wells, I will kick myself for missing it. It might get bought just out of faith, or at least rented.
So what’s making your “must have” list this week?
