Kung Fu Panda co-director John Stevenson is set to make a live action/CG scifi flick that pits a human band in an intergalactic Battle of the Bands called Alien Rock Band.
And the title is already ripe with cross merchandising opportunity to let you play the music from the film on your home consoles with a plastic guitar!
The movie will be a live action/CGI hybrid about “a garage band from Earth which journeys across the Universe to qualify for a shot at superstardom in an Intergalactic Battle of the Bands. It won’t be easy – the band will have to out-shred four-armed alien guitarists, face-down tentacled, punker octo-drummers, and fight snarling alien monsters – with music as its only weapon.”
I would summize how they ripped this idea off from my teenage years playing an RPG called Teenagers from Outer Space (a cartoon themed classic dice and paper tabletop game) but I wouldn’t have been the first to have thought of this kind of humans-compete-with-aliens-genetically-likely-to-beat-them kind of thing.
I just wonder how they are supposed to compete when its not just the playing field that is unfair, but the appeal to the inevitable clash of judges as well. I mean if one of them was to spout Vogon poetry as lyrics, there could very well be some small segment of the universe that would love it right?
The interesting part about this is that Eurythmics’ legendary musician Dave Stewart is also producing so we will get our hands on some really great music at least.
No word on who may star, but I hope to hell it isn’t Jack Black.
