I was not at all surprised to see the Disney liberated Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader take the top spot this weekend. Anything family friendly that would have given it competition is already out, and the only other Top 5 opening title was The Tourist. With the star power of Depp and Jolie I expected it to rank high, but I never place those bets against a family friendly film (Remember the Squash) so it is fitting that it gets the runner up seat.
Boxoffice Mojo has the estimates:
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader – $24,500,000 – Opening
The Tourist – $17,000,000 – Opening
Tangled – $14,559,000 – 3wks
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 – $8,500,000 – 4wks
Unstoppable – $3,750,000 – 5wks
I am surprised to see Harry Potter losing so much steam this quickly but it makes sense considering the $777m it has brought in Worldwide already. Everyone who was going to see it saw it FAST.
But the other surprise for me was seeing Unstoppable still clinging to a Top 5 Spot. The reviews are jumping at the opportunity to say it was not unstoppable, but its staying power at the boxoffice seems to disagree.
