Sam Raimi has been attached to the World of Warcraft film for so long now, but project after project keeps getting in the way of the director moving forward with it. And just recently his involvement with a Wizard of Oz prequel has put it on the back burner once more.
I don’t know why this film is taking so long to get off the ground. But maybe Raimi will stay on as producer and they let someone else direct. And it seems Moon director Duncan Jones is asking for a request to join the raid group.
“I’m hugely jealous of Sam Raimi. I really believe ‘World of Warcraft’ could be the launch of computer games as good films. And from the little I’ve read of interviews with him, the way he’s approaching it makes so much sense. It’s what I was talking about – it’s not worrying about how the game plays, it’s about creating the world of the game and investing the audience in that world.”
I like his approach to the film focusing on the world that is Warcraft instead of trying to adapt the gameplay to the vast lore already presented in the game.
World of Warcraft has become such a media giant even outside of the massively popular MMO game and is ripe with storytelling opportunities.
I really hope they do move forward with this, and Jones is as good a director as any to bring the story to life. I would rather Raimi was directing, but I am starting to wonder if he even wants to.
