2004: Year of the Giant Lizard

godzilla.jpgToho Studios have launched a website for Godzilla: Final Wars, the 28th installment in the Godzilla series. The early rumors that Ryuhei Kitamura of Versus fame would be directing have proven to be correct and Kitamura is promising upwards of 15 different giant monsters in the film. Toho has also announced that this installment, as implied by the title, will be the final one and the big rubber suit is being hung up for good. Godzilla fans are taking this second announcement with a grain of salt, however, as the big lizard has been retired in the past only to return a few years later. You can see a very early, and thus entirely devoid of footage thus rendering the whole process confusingly pointless, trailer for the film here.

American independent Rialto Studios have also released a similarly devoid of footage, yet considerably more stylish, trailer for their 50th anniversary release of the original Godzilla film here. This will be the first time this classic film has been seen in North American theaters in its original cut – i.e. no Raymond Burr and no overdubbing. Hey Weinstein! You paying attention?
